Intercultural Christmas Markets

German Christmas Market –
in London !?!

London is always worth a trip, and especially around Christmas time. So last week, I was quite eager to see what the local Christmas market would look like – and it totally astonished me: It was entirely and decisively GERMAN!!!??!!

Check it out...:

From far away it appears British enough...

... and the first sweets shops look normal.

But what is this: German "Glühwein"??

Even more stunning: "Traditional German Foods"!!!

The highlight: Käsekrainer and Bratwurst

Check out the shirt: "German Christmas Market" !!!

I was completely stunned. Where is the decade-old English-German rivalry? What about the war of the beach towels? How did this takeover of British pre-Christmas-festivities take place?

I have come to learn that it actually is a major attraction to have the German touch on the markets – including Glühwein and the sausages. Even the builders of the huts are flown in before to erect them in the German style; obviously, the British love it. And I enjoyed it too!

But I was happy to also find some local touch to it:

Beautiful and nice-smelling decoration

Old-fashioned merry-go-round

Finally some local touch: fish popcorn

Well, so that is the London Christmas Market!!

All in all, it was a brilliant experience in London – truly German!!!  :-)
